Project Snapshot

Project Overview

Hex Rock Climbing Gym was designed to be a premier recreational destination in Sarasota. To be successful, the 23,000-square-foot custom metal building required a massive, open-span interior with extreme vertical clearance to support towering climbing routes and the heavy dynamic loads of continuous daily use. Beyond the climbing walls, the client needed a multifaceted layout that seamlessly integrated a heavy-duty weightlifting gym, dual tranquil yoga studios, and a versatile multiuse commercial space.

The Florida Construction Challenges

Building a metal structure of this scale in Southwest Florida introduces a unique set of geographical and environmental hurdles that can quickly derail a project timeline if not managed expertly:

High Water Tables & Weather Delays

The massive concrete foundation required for a 23,000-square-foot, high-load facility takes significant time to cure. Between Sarasota’s naturally high water tables and unpredictable, heavy downpours, keeping the site dry enough to properly lay and cure the foundation was a major logistical hurdle.

Environmental Protection

The build site required strict environmental oversight to ensure construction runoff and heavy machinery did not disturb the surrounding habitats of protected local wildlife.

The Holliday Group Execution

To deliver this complex recreational facility on time and within budget, we deployed our highly strategic approach to site management and structural engineering.

Pre-Engineered Metal Building (PEMB) System

To achieve the required vertical height without relying on intrusive, load-bearing columns, we utilized a modern pre-engineered metal building system. This structural steel approach easily supports the heavy loads of the climbing walls while allowing for extreme flexibility in the floorplan. It also significantly accelerated the construction timeline compared to traditional masonry.

Aggressive Site & Moisture Management

To conquer the foundation challenges, we implemented advanced site dewatering techniques to mitigate the high water table. Our site superintendents meticulously scheduled concrete pours around tight weather windows, utilizing specialized curing methods to ensure the foundational integrity was never compromised by Florida’s humidity or rain.

Strict Environmental Compliance

We established rigorous, eco-friendly site boundaries. By utilizing heavy-duty silt fencing, controlled runoff trenches, and highly restricted staging areas, we successfully contained the construction footprint, protecting the local wildlife and keeping the project fully compliant with environmental regulations.

The Result

The 23,000-square-foot Hex Rock Climbing Gym stands as a highly durable, high-performance metal building capable of handling intense daily use. By utilizing structural steel framing, Holliday Group delivered a cost-efficient, structurally superior space that not only met the client’s current complex needs—from climbing to yoga—but also provides the flexibility for future expansion.
